Filename check script

I'm not much of a scripter, so if someone could at least point me in the right direction i'm happy to spend some time trying to write one. i'd prefer powershell, but batchfile or vbs would be fine too.

We have a database that performs full backups each night. Which later get copied offsite & then removed once they are 7 days old. Each day the filename is Databasename[001].4bk & this increments each day.

unfortunately, the 4d database log file can only be opened with the propriety software & this dosn't give me any king of automation. :-|

I'm needing a script that can check if the next expected filename exists & also check if it's less then the expected size to fire off an email.

eg. If we are currently at database[125].4bk & tonights backup will then be database[126].4bk, also if this backup stopped half way and was only 2Gb instead of...
